Rioja

Rioja

There is a reason why the wines of La Rioja are synonymous with Spanish wine.  Rioja’s marketing was so successful many people believe that Rioja is the grape rather than tempranillo, the noble grape, named because of its early ripening nature.

The wines of Rioja have been known for their classification system and long ageing potential, but like any wine region, there is room for growth and exploration.  A region with outstanding tradition, modern winemaking techniques edge in, allowing for an alta expression style for contrast.  More so, a new wave of viticultores are forging a bright future forward with eco-responsible farming and biodynamic approaches to the vineyards, crafting artisanal boutique wines that speak to the terruño of single parcels.

Further vinification of other indigenous grapes have come to the forefront, such as old vines garnacha, mazuelo, and graciano, which are now given careful consideration and attention.  The quality of rosados is on the rise, and a select few wineries are producing world class  collectibles.  The white varietals are getting their due, ranging from wines for everyday meals to serious gastro wines that can hang with the more established choices of the world.

There is room for all of these interpretations and then some.

Tradition and Innovation.

This is indeed the most exciting time to explore La Rioja.
