Bodegas Exopto "La Mimbrera" 2015, RiojaRegular price $90.00
A limited-release field blend celebrating the very first plot of old bush vines Tom Puyaubert (of Bodegas Exopto) purchased in the village of Ábalos, back in 2003. The 0.5-hectare plot of vines is home to roughly 70% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha and 5% Viura. The ancient Garnacha vines are 108-years-old while the Tempranillo and Viura sit in the 70-80-year-old range. Rooted in a limestone-rich soil, the vineyard is worked by mule (by the seasoned viticulturist Miguel Angel Mato), and all the viticulture is organic. The grapes were hand harvested and co-fermented using wild yeasts. The wine was then matured in a single, used French oak barrel before being bottled unfiltered. The result is a stunning Rioja; complex and powdery with layers of blackberry, cedar and sweet herb flavours framed by smoky tannins, sappy acidity and a long, tapering finish. A very classy single vineyard wine. A candidate to age, or to have with lighter dishes like roasted chicken, Herb roasted Cornish game hens and even Mongolian beef would be delicious.
