Spanish Treasure

Spanish Treasure

The majority of wines produced in Spain are designed for early consumption after bottling.  That leaves a little room for select wines designed specifically for long-aging.  These special wines are renowned for their potential to age gracefully for many decades, developing unforeseen layers of complexity, character, and depth.  The evolution during the maturation of these wines is transformative and remarkable.

While robust wines made with the Tempranillo varietal from regions such as La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, and Toro garner the most attention, very old sherries share some of this spotlight in the aged wine category as well.  Even the Albariño grape is being cultivated for special cuvées with the capacity for years of cellaring potential, as was done traditionally in the past.

Terruño (the influences of the soil, land, and climate that impact the growing and winemaking environment) is paramount for crafting wines for long-aging. Vintage, quality grape selection, the type and size of oak barrels, and length time in the cellar are some of the other key factors that contribute to the magic.

Once you’ve tasted one of these aged beauties, you’ll wonder why you haven’t tried one sooner.
