Luís Anxo Rodríguez

Luís Anxo Rodríguez

When one thinks of great wines from Galicia, Ribeiro is not what first comes to mind.  Wines from Ribeiro had its heyday in the late 1600-1700’s, and then followed the familiar story of succumbing to phylloxera, bulk production and obscurity.  Enter Luís Anxo Rodríguez, a native son of the region with a vision towards recuperating native varietals to craft wines that express the Ribeiro terruño.

Since 1988,  out of a tiny adega called Viña de Martín, built by his grandfather and so named after the first vineyard Luís took over from his uncle, Luís has been steadily crafting wines that are distinctive and age-worthy.

Working with about six hectares comprised of 200 micro-parcels around his native village of Arnoia, Luís has replanted and revitalized Treixadura, Lado, and Godello, as well as several red varietals such as Caiño Longo and Redondo, Ferrol, and Brancellao.  Vines range from 10 to 60 years in age, are oriented on south facing slopes, and grow on sandy, decomposed granite.

Luís strives to maintain balance in the vineyards through organic farming practices, followed by fermentation with native yeasts, aged on the lees in oak barrels with min. S02 added.
