Tomeu Llabrés - Ca'n Verdura

As Mallorca has been experiencing a wine renaissance – one toward grapes that transmit the essence of the island – we look to a pioneering cadre of winemakers responsible for the spark and who continue to do the work.

One of the leaders in the vanguard of Mallorca’s wine revolution is Tomeu Llabrés, the viticultor for C’an Verdura, a small winery founded in 2012 with humble beginnings out of a garage. Tomeu acquired his oenology degree in Tarragona and learned the wine ropes under Álvaro Palacios in Priorat, followed by work with 4 Kilos, Anima Negra, and Son Campaner in Mallorca.

This sixth-gen artisanal winemaker continues his family tradition of cultivating vines in Binissalem, farms where grapes grow alongside other local crops such as apricot, almond, and olive trees. Naturally it follows that Tomeu practices minimal intervention in the cellar as a complement to polycultural, biodiverse agriculture. Tomeu champions native Mallorcan grapes such as Mantonegro, Callet, Prensal Blanc, and Giró Ros, and is focused on the recuperation of the cultural traditions of Mallorcan viticulture.

“You have to live it (the wine) to know it.”  - Tomeu Llabrés
