Clos i Terrasses
In 1988, Daphne Glorian rolled the dice on Priorat, obtaining 17 terraces of vines situated just outside the village of Gratallops. Together with the young guns, René Barbier, Álvaro Palacios, Carles Pastrana, and Josep Lluís Pérez, they pooled their resources to pioneer a renaissance in a region rich in history but thirsty for recognition for crafting fine wines on a global stage.
The winery is named Clos i Terrasses after a 1.7-hectare parcel called Escales, planted on steep, sloped terraces surrounded by woods. Escales’ north-facing exposure creates ideal conditions for the slow ripening of the indigenous varietal Garnatxa.
Clos Erasmus, the first and flagship wine of the winery, was named after the Renaissance author Desiderius Erasmus, a favorite writer of Daphne and her father. Made from younger vines and farmed sustainably, Clos Erasmus is what brought critical acclaim to the nascent winery and helped put Priorat on the map. Later on, with the acquisition of more vineyards, Laurel was introduced, and is now being made in red and white. In 2004, Ester Nin was brought on as Daphne’s viticulturist to facilitate the conversion to biodynamic farming. Today the estate manages just under 26 total hectares.
