Ismael Gozalo
Ismael Gozalo is a representative of five generations of winegrowers in Nieva, Segovia. Ismael started by working with his family winery, Viñedos de Nieva, as well as in a partnership with Javier Zaccagnini named Ossian. Ismael maintained a solo side project called Microbio (1998) to showcase ungrafted, pre-phylloxera Verdejo vines thriving on sandy, clay, slate, and limestone soils. Protected by a pine forest, some of the oldest vines are 275 years old. By 2013 after receiving critical acclaim, Microbio became Ismael’s sole major focus.
Ismael practices biodynamic farming, using only indigenous yeasts and spontaneous fermentation with no fining or filtration and little to no S02 added.
