Xurxo Alba

Bodegas Albamar, based in Cambados, has been producing Atlantic red and white wines in the heart of Rías Baixas, the O Salnés sub-region, since 2006.  Xurxo Alba Padín produces very pure wines that are the personification of Galicia, the spirit of the land and the sea.

With small parcels so close to the Atlantic Ocean, near the mouth of the Umia river, Xurxo’s primary focus is on albariño, al alba del mar (next to the sea).  His family has been farming and making albariño for generations, but it wasn't until Xurxo finished his oenological studies that the Alba family started bottling and offering their wines to a global market.

The Alba family owns about 12 hectares and are constantly seeking to acquire more parcels.  In addition, Xurxo also sources fruit from other farmers who practice organic viticulture.  In the cellar, Xurxo applies a wide range of techniques innovative to the region such as spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, aging in Stockinger barrels, batonnage, no malolactic vs. malolactic, and further experimentation on a wine by wine, vintage by vintage basis.

In addition to producing a godello from Valdeorras, Xurxo also produces Atlantic red wines from Ribeira Sacra and Rías Baixas using native varietals such as caiño, espadeiro, and mencía.
